Christian Rapper Kanye West Calls for End to Gay Bashing
08.19.05 (5:41 pm)   [edit]
Kanye West has done it again. First he told the world that rappers could rap about Jesus -- and make lots of money in the process. Now, he's telling his fellow rappers and hip-hoppers to stop bashing gays. In a rather bold move during an MTV interview, West calls for an end to gay bashing in rap and hip-hop.

"West says hip-hop was always about "speaking your mind and about breaking down barriers, but everyone in hip-hop discriminates against gay people." He adds that in slang, gay is "the opposite, the exact opposite word of hip-hop."

Kanye's message: "Not just hip-hop, but America just discriminates. And I wanna just, to come on TV and just tell my rappers, just tell my friends, `Yo, stop it.'"

I noticed this story about Kanye West isn't receiving nearly as much attention from the gay press as the story about Chris Rock's supposed anti-gay rantings. I saw Rock on Graham Norton, a talk show hosted by a gay host and shown on MTV's gay network LOGO. I guess Rock isn't all that homophobic, eh?

Anyway . . . It's nice to see someone like Kanye West standing up and speaking out against what seems to be the norm in hip-hop music: gay bashing. I don't expect his words to change the face of hip-hop much, but I can hope he'll be a great influence on the young people who look up to him.
