The Secret Has Consumed Me For Awhile
    04.27.07 (1:37 pm)   [edit]
I have a couple of friends who have suggested I read the book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne for months. I've read countless reviews that offer nothing by praise for Byrne. For months, I've made a mental note to pick up the book and read it. I finally bought it last night. My goal is to start and complete the book today, before I get too involved in any other activities.

Soon, I'll learn if the book is really worth the hype, or if Byrne hired the best marketing genius in the world to make us believe it is.

If you've read the book, I'd like to know your thoughts.

Recent Poll Suggests Wisconsin Voters Will Choose Democrats in 2008
    04.26.07 (7:22 pm)   [edit]
A recent poll conducted by St. Norbert College indicates that Wisconsin voters may vote Democrat in the 2008 election. Four hundred (400) Wisconsin residents were polled via phone; of those 400, 47% said they would vote for a Democrat and 29% said they would vote for a Republican:

I wouldn't get too excited just yet. We all know how much momentum Howard Dean had going into the early part of the 2004 election. By the time voters actually chose a Democratic Presidential candidate, a lot of us were left scratching our heads and goin' "Howard who?"

    A few thoughts:

Hillary Clinton came out ahead of Barack Obama. No surprise there. It's my opinion that WI voters just aren't ready for a Black man in the White House. A White female stands a much better chance than any Black male ever will. I also noticed Clinton came out ahead of John Edwards as well. I guess WI voters don't want to take their chances on anyone who already failed at his attempt to capture the White House.

As far as those Republican Presidential candidates are concerned: Why in the hell does McCain's name keep showing up? If at first you don't succeed, keep tryin' and tryin' and tryin'.

MySpace Democrats Using Online Social Networking to Woo Voters
    04.26.07 (5:28 pm)   [edit]
I've gathered a list of "MySpace Democrats" who are using the extremely popular social networking site to woo voters. If you're assuming most people who use MySpace are between the age of 14 - 18, a quick perusal of any of these candidates' friends list will state otherwise.

Most of these MySpace Democrats are using their profiles to post their political ideology and their voting records; however, many of them are also using these profiles to promote various social agendas. I'm guessing a very small percentage of these MySpace Democrats actually manage their own profiles; most likely we're viewing the efforts of dedicated volunteers (or hired help).

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA): her profile looks like it's been taken over by Spammers, but with a little push perhaps she will make sure the page functions as intended.

Russ Feingold (D-WI): Appears to have a regularly updated blog which outlines some of his political views.

Howard Dean, MD: If you subscribe to Dr. Dean's newsletter (as I do), you probably already have a lot of the information he's posting on his blog. If you don't, stop by and check him out. While I certainly hope he doesn't plan to run in 2008, I believe a lot of his opinions are worth chewin' over.

Senator Boxer: A Boxer-fan run page that starts her About Me section with, "I DO NOT care for Republicans that much. . . "

Barack Obama: Already featured to the left in my sidebar, however, he deserves another mention. Take a look. The interesting thing about this profile is it's a fan-run page that's consistently updated and has a very large friends/supporters list. Also, check out the following: Women for Barack 08 (great idea, but poorly executed), Arizonians for Barack, and Boston for Barack.

Governor Ted Strickland (Ohio): Not one I've heard much about, but after reading through his blog posting Living within our means. Investing in what matters, he might just land on my list of politicians to keep an eye on.

Senator Sherrod Brown (Unofficial): Considered an Independent voice for voters in Ohio.

Joe Bidden 2008: This candidate also has another MySpace profile. With a little organization, the two pages might serve quite useful for Biden.

Senator John Edwards 08: Definitely one of the few pages that's professionally managed. I'm not too fond of John Edwards. Hopefully, I will eventually come to see him in a much better light than I did in 04.

Other items of interest may be: bands Against Bush Worldwide, Drinking Liberally (promoting democracy one pint at a time), Young Democrats, DNC, Democratic Party, Young Dem, and Take Back Ohio.

One more thing, you may want to read eLiberal's blog posting First of its kind online democracy vote begins on MySpace.

Dear Dad, I Accidentally Found Your Book on Lesbian Sex. Oops!
    04.26.07 (2:42 am)   [edit]
I don't know how many of you remember my interview with Felice Newman, author of The Whole Lesbian Sex Book. When I started my sex blog, I loved reading her work. She touched on subjects you rarely hear lesbians discuss openly.

A week or so back, I received an email from Felice regarding an Arkansas Dad who sued the public library after his 14 and 16 year old sons "accidentally" found Felice's book while they were supposedly looking for books on military history.

I've been reading all the press on this issue and thinking about my own 14 year old. I remember the time he happened upon my sex toys (hidden in my room) because he was purposely looking for anything he knew he shouldn't be looking at. Or the time I found Playboy in his sock drawer because he was stupid enough to think I wouldn't violate his privacy. Or the time I found condoms in his desk drawer because, well, I'm guessing (and hoping) he didn't get a chance to use them.

Anyone who has a child (male or female) over the age of 12, knows they will go on a hunt for anything sex-related, be it in their parents' room, the local library, the internet, or the convenient store (ever noticed porn mags are now strategically placed at the front of the store by the register? that's so kids can't hide in the isles and flip through them!)

I don't believe for a second these boys were looking for military books (oh how right-wing patriotic of them!), I don't care what kinda Christian home they were supposedly raised in.

According to [the father], his two sons, ages 14 and 16, were "greatly disturbed" by their discovery and apparently underwent "many sleepless nights" as a result. In a letter faxed to Mayor Bob McCaslin, Adams himself wrote that the book pushes "an immoral social agenda."
Sleepless nights? Unless these kids were allowed to sit and read the entire book, cover to cover, I can't imagine how much of its text would cause two healthy teenage boys to be distraught over the idea that two women can actually have sex without the use of a man.

The father, Earl Adams, has threatened to solicit the help of the Christian community if Felice's book is ever returned to the library shelf. By Christians, does he mean those self-righteous, right-wing, closet queers who can't find a much more serious political issue to occupy their time?

A word of advice to Mr. Adams: hide your porn someplace other than your sock drawer. We wouldn't want your kids to have any more sleepless nights, now would we?

Is it normal to hate every woman your son dates?
    04.24.07 (11:12 pm)   [edit]
First thing, thanks to everyone who welcomed me back. I really appreciate your well wishes.

I was about to head to bed. But before I did that, I checked my son's MySpace page -- to make sure he's not gettin' into anything naughty. His "girlfriend" (she's 15) sent him email telling him to tell other girls to stop calling him cute. The first thing I thought was, "How does he put up with that dumb bitch?" Then I realized she's 15. FIFTEEN. I think most 15 year old girls are passive aggressive little wenches. Correct? It's like a skill they learn in Home Ec class or somethin'. Or a skill they pick up while playing with dolls and learning how to master the skills of being a whiney housewife someday. Wherever they learn such horrid tactics for dealin' with their men, it's extremely unattractive. I try to tell my son that everyday, but he treats me like I know nothing about women. He thinks I, the anti-female lesbian, is unschooled in the sneaky ways of feminine creatures. Ha! (and no laughing! how many anti-male straight girls do ya know? A LOT!)

I'm rambling here. I'm trying to mentally prepare for my many, many political rantings to come. It feels like I'm out of shape mentally. I guess it's true what they say; your brain turns to mush if you don't use it often.

I missed tonight's episode of Work Out on Bravo because I was (gasp!) at the gym when it aired. Anybody watch it? If so, what happened!?

The Return of SistersTalk [April 20, 2007]
    04.20.07 (10:09 pm)   [edit]
I've missed blogging and I've really missed SistersTalk. It's been 7 months since my last post.

Thanks to everyone who checked on me, asking if I would ever return to blogging. I had to take a nice long break; professional and personal obligations didn't leave much time (or energy) for blogging here at SistersTalk. Some of my professional obligations wouldn't allow me to continue my very outspoken (and often extremely negative) views about life, politics, and people in general. Some day I'll explain that further.

Anywho, I'm back -- and I'm back for good. I'm not sure I want to jump back into the political ranting right away. I'm too mentally exhausted for that. I was thinking I'd start out with some light-hearted chat about those horrid reality TV shows, move onto some steamy sex chat, then head back to politics. Sound like a plan?

Oh, for those who don't know this: I've lost 65 lbs. Yey me! I've been dieting and working out at Anytime Fitness. That place is great; you should find one near you.

Who wants to catch me up on The L Word 4? I didn't watch one single episode. Can you believe that?

Hey, let me know the latest and greatest blogs I should be checkin' out. Leave a link in my comments, please.
