Buying for Equality: Shop Gay Friendly for the Holidays
11.30.05 (1:14 pm) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I've been deleting most of the HRC's emails in the past year or so. I'm still angry about their blind support of John Kerry even though he did not support full and equal rights for ALL people. But, I couldn't help myself and I opened today's email. The HRC offers a handy guide for supporting companies that support equality. Use the list with caution (since we all know the HRC doesn't always support those who support full and equal rights for all people).

View the Buying for Equality list.

Umm, Wal-Mart is on the list with a 57 rating. Another surprise is MayTag with a 29 rating. How much money did those two companies pay HRC to promote them? Ha!

    Just a quick mention:

I received the book The Impossible from author Paul Loeb about a week ago. My first thought? Damn authors and their promos! It turned out to be a great read, if you like inspirational books. It's a good book to read through at bed time -- or while you're waiting at the doctor's office. Thanks, Paul!

Would You Adopt a Baby of A Different Race?
11.30.05 (10:13 am) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

My ex brother in-law and his wife recently adopted an African American baby -- a little girl. For all of you who have followed my blog, you know my ex in-laws are white. I was kinda shocked that my ex bro in-law adopted a Black baby, but then realized he's just that kind of guy. Race has never been an issue for him. My former in-laws had some trouble adjusting to having a Black daughter in-law -- in the beginning -- but my exhusband is on his 2nd Black wife, so they should be used to it by now.

I thought I would present my readers with this poll:

Public Hearing on Gay Marriage Ban in Wisconsin
11.29.05 (6:17 am) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I've been trying to post this forever now. Tblog is such a pain in the ass sometimes.

Action Wisconsin is all over the proposed ban on civil unions and gay marriage in WI. You can view updates on the issue on their site. A public hearing will be held today at 10:00am. If you live in Wisconsin and can make it to the hearing, here's what you should expect:

Upon Arrival: Get information and updates in our gathering space.

    * REGISTER YOUR OPPOSITION. Whether you want to testify or not, be sure to sign in with the Judiciary Committee as being opposed to the amendment. Slips should be available outside the hearing room. Give these to an Action Wisconsin volunteer or the clerks who work for the Legislature.
    * Public Testimony: Testimony might be limited by the committee. Show up as close to 10am as possible to get on the speakers list.
    * Stickers and Signs: Signs are not allowed in the hearing room but can be used outside the room or in the rotunda. Stickers and signs will be available in the hearing room and gathering space.
    * Etiquette: Even though we will hear hurtful and untrue information about our families, it's important to demonstrate that we are dignified. It may not be fair, but lawmakers will eject people from the hearing room who talk out loud, boo, or clap during others' testimony. They also have the power to shut down the hearing.

Here's a schedule of events for tomorrow:

9:15am, Capitol's Assembly Parlor: Press conference
9:30am, Capitol 2nd floor North Hearing Room: Briefing in the Action Wisconsin/Center Advocates gathering space
10:00am, Capitol Room 411: Hearing begins (The hearing was originally scheduled for 9am)
4:00pm, Capitol Rotunda: Vigil led by interfaith leaders
Throughout the day: The 2nd floor North Hearing Room will be open as a safe gathering space. Childcare will be provided.

One of my new friends here in Beloit sent me a link to a radio station in Janesville, WI that has a poll on the proposed gay marriage ban. The results are almost tied. One of the comments on the poll was just laughable. It sounded like something someone heard somewhere else (from, oh, George W. Bush maybe!?) and just spewed out their mouths without any real serious thought: "We need such an amendment. We have to many judges that don't intepret the law as it should be. If it was in the constitution then this would be avoided. I would support this amendment wholeheartly." Does that sound like parrot-talk to any of you? I wanted to correct this idiot's grammar, but I refrained. Other comments are just as ignorant. You have to read them! That's Janesville for ya -- home of the KKK.

Is Honor Possible in a War Like the One in Iraq?
11.28.05 (7:02 am) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I hope everyone had a GREAT Thanksgiving weekend. One more day of gluttony to come before the year ends. Yeeah!

I want to point readers to an article Aaron sent me:

So it was only natural that Westhusing acted when he learned of possible corruption by U.S. contractors in Iraq. A few weeks before he died, Westhusing received an anonymous complaint that a private security company he oversaw had cheated the U.S. government and committed human rights violations. Westhusing confronted the contractor and reported the concerns to superiors, who launched an investigation.

In e-mails to his family, Westhusing seemed especially upset by one conclusion he had reached: that traditional military values such as duty, honor and country had been replaced by profit motives in Iraq, where the U.S. had come to rely heavily on contractors for jobs once done by the military.

A Journey That Ended in Anguish

I can see GOP groupies screamin' "lies, all lies!" in unison. Or better yet, I see them calling this a liberal media ploy. I mean come on, it's not possible at all that there's something completely unethical going on in Iraq -- compliments of the US government. Not possible at all!

    Screw That Turkey Tradition
11.24.05 (1:17 pm) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I completely ditched tradition this year and had baked pork chops for dinner. So, my menu was: Baked pork chops, stuffed crabs, stuffing, garlic and butter rice, cornbread, string bean casserole, and apple pie. My boys ate and ate, then left to spend time with their father and stepmother. He's leaving for Iraq soon, so I decided not to make a fuss about him bringing the kids home late this morning.

And now, I'm gonna go find a liquor store that's still open and drink the rest of the day away; it's tuaca and coke until I pass out.

Oh, one more thing. How many of you are getting up super early to catch all those "After Thanksgiving Day" sales at the mall? I'm not.

    Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

    No More Jesusland? Keep Dreamin'
11.23.05 (3:32 pm) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I read a brief snippet about this Bush-approval-map over at AlterNet. The writer seems to think (or conveys to us someone else's opinion) that Americans are no longer living in Jesusland since there's only about 3 states where Bush has a 50+ approval rating. Please, don't get too happy just yet. If you asked those Bush voters in the blue areas if they would turn back the clock and vote for Kerry, they would say "HELL NO!" They would still vote for Bush even though they're disapproving of his actions in extremely large numbers. If you think back to the election (it wasn't that long ago people, let go of that short-term memory), you'll remember that Bush's approval rating was shit for awhile during the election, but he still pulled off a victory (using that term loosely).

We're still living in Jesusland. The neo-Nazi Christians are just a bit quiet right now. You'll see how loud they get in 2008.

    Homophobia Runnin' Rampant
11.23.05 (2:22 pm) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I was distracted by this article on a proposed gay marriage ban in Wisconsin as I was searching for my Madison.com blog post on what I consider racial discrimination at a local gay bar. I was there this past weekend meeting up with some friends and the bartendar says, "Genia, I'm so disappointed in you. I read your review on Club Impulse." The first thing I thought was Gee, it took that long for one of the employees here to find the article? I wrote it in May! The second thing I thought was, These people read the paper? Ok, so I'm a little snooty. I know. No apologies.

Anyway, back to the proposed gay marriage ban in Wisconsin. Do these people NOT have anything else to worry their pretty little heads about? Oh, like the war in Iraq? Obviously, two people of the same sex having the right to marry is way more important than Bush's war, the economy, jobs, homeless people, child molesters, wife beaters, and a host of other social issues that I have NEVER seen conservatives bust their asses to protest against.

As if the proposed marriage ban in WI isn't pissing me off enough, Tari sent me an article about a lesbian who's using an anti-gay law to attack her former partner. Both women signed a court-approved joint custody agreement in 2001, but now the biological mother is using Ohio's anti-gay laws to keep the other mother from seeing the child. There's nothing like a woman scorned! I dislike my exhusband immensely; however, that doesn't give me the right to keep him from his children.

    Moving on . . .

Kanye West, the Christian rapper who spoke out against homophobia in hip-hop is still wrestling with his own homophobia. He says:

The 27-year-old tells the New York Daily News, "I'm still trying to get over my own homophobia. I still wouldn't feel comfortable at a gay bar. I wouldn't go to a gay parade. I don't know if I'm in favour of gay marriage or not."

I admire Kanye's ability to be honest about his own homophobia. Most homophobes will never admit they're simply uncomfortable with homosexuals; instead, they whip out the good ol' Bible (a book I can bet you most of them haven't read in ages) and start spewing anti-gay hatred. Props to Kanye.

Ha! Ken's not happy at all with his randomly selected plate although, "He was amused at first, but later feared others might think he intentionally requested a vanity plate with both his first name and the numerical symbol of the antichrist."

He's worried about what other people think even though he initially liked the plate. What's the word for people like Ken, everyone? Umm . . . "chicken-shit?"

I see plates that say 420 all the time and I NEVER think those people smoke pot. **snicker**

Copy Editor Fired for Lesbian Joke
11.15.05 (6:34 pm) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

The girls' soccer team at Immaculate High School celebrated a goal that helped them win the championship game. A copy editor for the local newspaper placed a caption beneath a picture that stated they were actually celebrating one of their teammates coming out as a lesbian. The caption was considered offensive and unprofessional:

"It was a flagrant, awful violation of every journalistic principle," said Paul Steinmetz, the paper's editor. "It's just embarrassing to us and untenable."

Copy Editor Fired for 'Lesbian' Soccer Caption

Tari, a SistersTalk reader, sent me this story. She asked an interesting question: how come it is considered so awful to be 'labled' as lesbian? I'm thinking it was the jab at stereotyping female athletes (perpetrated by someone who is supposed to behave professionally) that was the most bothersome. It's similar to Hillary Clinton's critics calling her a lesbian because she's a strong-willed woman, or calling a single, independent, 40-year-old woman a lesbian just because she doesn't have a man in her life.

Bush Rewrites History To Criticize His Anti-war Critics
11.14.05 (12:18 pm) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

This is an excellent article that walks through Bush's pre-war and post-war comments, dissecting each of them bit by bit:

[Bush] I also recognize that some of our fellow citizens and elected officials didn't support the liberation of Iraq. And that is their right, and I respect it. As President and Commander-in-Chief, I accept the responsibilities, and the criticisms, and the consequences that come with such a solemn decision.

Bush might accept "the responsibilities and criticisms," but has yet to acknowledge the mistakes he and his aides made before and after the invasion about planning for a post-invasion Iraq. He also has not insisted on any accountability for these mistakes. For instance, he gave a spiffy medal to former CIA chief George Tenet, who was responsible for the prewar intelligence failure.

[Bush] While it's perfectly legitimate to criticize my decision or the conduct of the war, it is deeply irresponsible to rewrite the history of how that war began.

When was the last time Bush talked about how the war began--that is, when did he mention that his primary reason for war (protecting the American public from the supposed WMD threat posed by Saddam Hussein) was discredited by reality? Is ignoring history the same as rewriting it?

    [ . . . ]

[Bush] These baseless attacks send the wrong signal to our troops and to an enemy that is questioning America's will. As our troops fight a ruthless enemy determined to destroy our way of life, they deserve to know that their elected leaders who voted to send them to war continue to stand behind them. Our troops deserve to know that this support will remain firm when the going gets tough.

Who said that "it's perfectly legitimate to criticize" the "decision [to go to war in Iraq] or the conduct of the war"? That was Bush, moments earlier, in the same speech. So which is it? Is it okay to criticize the conduct of the war or not?

Bush Rewrites History To Criticize His Anti-war Critics

Umm, nope. It's not okay to criticize the war. See IRS Goes to Church

Rev. George Regas delivered an anti-war sermon the Sunday before the 2004 election and now the IRS Goes to Church -- threatening to revoke All Saints Episcopal Church's tax-exemption status because of the anti-war sermon.

More here, here, here, and here.

So, if I understand this correctly: George Bush and the Republican party can campaign in Black churches, wooing the self-righteous Black vote, but a church that speaks out against the war will lose its tax-exempt status?

John Edwards WaPo Op-Ed: The Right Way in Iraq
11.12.05 (1:40 pm) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I just received an email from One America that the following Op-Ed will appear in the WaPo tomorrow:

    I was wrong.

Almost three years ago we went into Iraq to remove what we were told -- and what many of us believed and argued -- was a threat to America. But in fact we now know that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction when our forces invaded Iraq in 2003. The intelligence was deeply flawed and, in some cases, manipulated to fit a political agenda.

It was a mistake to vote for this war in 2002. I take responsibility for that mistake. It has been hard to say these words because those who didn't make a mistake -- the men and women of our armed forces and their families -- have performed heroically and paid a dear price. [Source: The Right Way in Iraq, by John Edwards]

So, what's up with John Edwards? That's the question I have.

    Boondocks and the Word Nigger
11.12.05 (1:18 pm) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I see no point in saying, the 'Boondocks' and the N-Word. The word is "nigger" -- or "niggah" as I often hear it stated. But, Earl Ofari Hutchinson, a blogger over at AlterNet, sees a problem with The Boondock's creator using the word quite frequently in the new show on Cartoon Network.

I have to side with conservatives when they say they're really sick of the PC bullshit. I use words like fag, dyke, pansy, nigger, and what-have-you because it's honest language. I'm saying what other people are thinking -- but are too afraid to say. I don't see it as stooping to a new low when artists and writers use words they hear in their everyday life as part of the creative process. What are we? So pathetic that we now allow the liberals-on-a-PC-agenda to dictate to us what words we shouldn't be using?

You won't see too many complaints from me about rap artists using sexist language or rap artists calling women bitches and "hos', even though I did applaud Kanye West for having the guts to speak out against homophobic rap lyrics. It's my idea that as long as parents are doing a good job with their kids, it really doesn't matter what rap artists or other artists do or say. The problem though is that there are a lot of really shitty parents in the world and pop culture influences our kids way more than it should.

Let's not blame Aaron McGruder because he chooses to keep it real; and let's not make him responsible for raising everybody else's children. The show comes on at 11:00pm on a Sunday night. Children shouldn't be up watching TV at that time anyway!

    As for Hutchinson's point here:

There are still dozens of daily examples where whites (and other non-blacks) taunt, and harass blacks by calling them nigger, spray paint the word on their homes, businesses, churches, physically assault and even murder blacks. In the FBI's annual count of hate crimes in America, blacks still make up the overwhelming majority of victims. The N-word reigns supreme at the top of the stack as the favorite racial epithet hurled at blacks during these crimes. Even when the word isn't used, the sentiment is that blacks are still fair game too be abused and dehumanized, and the N-word reinforces that belief.

It's not the word "nigger" that's causing the violence. Anyone who thinks otherwise is living on another planet.

Anti-War Crowd, Shut the Fuck Up
11.11.05 (11:51 am) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I just had to point people to this beautiful display of neocon American principles:

Let me write the reponse from the anti-war crowd: "Those weren't actual WMDs, and those that were weren't actual huge stockpiles ready to use, so Chimpy McBushitler still lied us into his phony war!" Kindly note the continual moving of the goalposts every time more evidence backing the decision to go to war comes to light. I once dated a woman who argued like that; it's a miracle that relationship lasted as long as it did.

[=http://wizbangblog.com/archiv..."target="new"Is it time for the anti-war crowd to sit down and STFU?]

    A few thoughts:

    1. I'm glad colleges don't teach like that -- at least good ones don't! Sit down and shut the fuck up! Not cool. BAD, BAD, BAD.

    2. When you really can't figure out how to defend your President and his sad ass approval rating, ya just tell people to sit down and shut the fuck up. It's so American!

    3. It reminds me of children on the playground who get angry and don't know how to deal with their frustrations: "I did not! Just shut up!"

    4. Is this the new American-way we're pushing in Iraq? If so, heaven help those people.

    5. Wait, I thought we still had the right to protest whatever the hell we want in this country. Or, do we have to wait until a Democrat is in office? And then, do we get to tell the neocons to sit down and shut the fuck up?

    6. Isn't it time for the war-supporters to stand the fuck up and fight (preferably in Iraq), instead of talkin' shit about the anti-war crowd? I've got $10 a $1000 that says this Wizbang author is sittin' on his ass stateside somewhere! I have a new name for him: Chicken Little.

    Guess Who's Going to Iraq?
11.11.05 (10:37 am) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

If only for the peace it will bring to my life, I have waited patiently for this news: my exhusband (a Reservist for almost 4 years now) is heading to Iraq.

Ok, I lied. I haven't waited patiently. I've been praying for it actually.

Now before you think I'm a mean ass, bitter, bitchy, exwife, let me say a couple of things first.

    1. His deployment will save me a lot of money because I won't be in and out of court for child custody issues everytime he gets a wild hair up his ass. No matter how many times he loses, he just won't give up.

    2. He supports Bush; he supports the war; let him get his ass over there and walk the walk. I'm pretty fed up with people like him, screaming support out one side of his mouth, yet sittin' on his perfectly healthy ass waiting for someone else to go to Iraq.

Alright, so I'm bitter. At least I can admit that. I do feel bad for my children; their father will be gone for some time and I'm afraid I won't be able to fight with them quite like Dad does. I'll do my best!

I was reading over at Taylor Marsh's blog [92,000 More Troops to Deploy to Iraq] that it looks like Bush's pet project will last for quite some time. Hey now, I thought this war was over a long time ago. But nooo, it just keeps goin' and goin' and goin'

    Most Americans Doubt Bush's Honesty
11.11.05 (7:55 am) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

Is this news? I mean, come on! This really shouldn't be a surprise:

Almost six in 10 — 57 percent — said they do not think the Bush administration has high ethical standards and the same portion says President Bush is not honest, an AP-Ipsos poll found. Just over four in 10 say the administration has high ethical standards and that Bush is honest. Whites, Southerners and white evangelicals were most likely to believe Bush is honest. [Poll: Most Americans Doubt Bush's Honesty]

Personally, I don't think he's any more dishonest than any other President this country has seen; he's been much bolder about puttin' his shit out there for scrutiny. What I find extremely ironic is that while "Whites, Southerners and white evangelicals were most likely to believe Bush is honest," it took a whole lot of Hispanics and Black folks to get that rat bastard back in office. So, does this mean Hispanics and Blacks have always known he's a liar and just didn't care?

    A Comeback for the Democrats?
11.10.05 (10:20 am) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I read an interesting article by Terry Neal -- Are Democrats Riding a National Wave?:

With key wins in the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races, some Democratic leaders are all but declaring the beginning of the end for Republicans.

But were Tuesday's results, which included Californians' rejection of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's four "reform" ballot initiatives, truly signs of a national wave? Or were the results a series of events based on the unique dynamics of each state?

I wish I could say we're seeing a comeback for Democrats, but it would be wishful thinking. Bush's pathetic approval rating and the GOP's legal troubles aren't really signaling an end for Republican rule -- at least not to me. The only way we'll see an end to this pathetic neo-fascist government is when the Democrats make major changes -- big changes -- in that party. Until then, Republicans can be as fucked as they wanna be -- the 2004 election being the perfect example.

If Bush's poll numbers remain low, Democrats won't have to fear him coming to their states to campaign for their opponents next year. That's important, because a popular president can make a point or two difference by actively campaigning for a candidate. As of last month, Bush's approval rating was above 50 percent in only six states.

But there's plenty of data to suggest that Democrats are overstating the importance of Tuesday's results. An Election Day survey by the Associated Press and Ipsos showed that only 20 percent of New Jersey voters cast ballots in favor of Corzine to demonstrate opposition to Bush. And congressional Democrats have an approval rating that rivals Bush's (according to the latest nonpartisan Pew Research Center poll, Bush and congressional Democrats approval rating was tied at just 36 percent).

I certainly hope Democrats aren't relying on Bush's poor approval rating to win over voters. It's the same sad ass tactic they used in the 2004 election, instead of presenting us with a great Democratic candidate.

Gay Man Charged With Killing Attacker
11.09.05 (2:47 pm) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

I suppose we're not allowed to call this a hate crime since the homosexual who was attacked ended up killing one of his attackers. But, let me ask you something.

If four men attacked a woman while she walked alone down a street, and she ended up killing one in self defense, would the court charge her with voluntary manslaughter? Absolutely not! Oh wait. Maybe so. It depends on the situation, right? If the woman was a prostitute hanging out in a bad neighborhood some of us would be inclined to believe she had it comin', right? Wrong!

So, why is the court charging this homosexual man with voluntary manslaughter when he was attacked by four men? Is it because this case involves men? Is it because the case involves a gay man? I believe it's a little of both, but more of the latter.

Hat tip to SistersTalk reader, Tari.

    The Boondocks on Adult Swim

Aaron sent me a link to The Boondocks on Adult Swim a couple of days ago. Thanks, Aaron.

I actually caught the premier episode and couldn't stop laughing. I agree, the show is probably the most racially charged show on television. La Shawn Barber will be REALLY embarrassed of Black folks now -- although I can't imagine her being any more embarrassed than she already is.

A quick synopsis: A Black grandfather takes custody of his grandchildren and moves them from the south side of Chicago to a very nice (and very white) neighborhood. Grandpa wants to fit in, but his grandkids ain't havin' it. My favorite line from the show came when a white neighbor visits Grandpa and asks him how he feels about gay marriage. Grandpa says, "I disagree with all marriage." (I think I paraphrased). Grandpa and his fucked up, grossly obese, white neighbor bond immediately and Grandpa is invited into the fold.

There's a crazy Iraq vet in the first episode who lets the youngest grandkid play with guns, and the oldest grandkid tries to insult all the white folks by telling them Jesus is really Black. You can't miss this show; it's an absolute must-see. Watch out South Park!

Lesbian (Detachable) Fellatio -- Oh My!
11.09.05 (7:28 am) posted by Genia vote for me on digg and reddit

A little while back, after reading Felice's column on lesbians jerkin' off like guys, I emailed her and asked that she write a piece on blow jobs -- just for us lesbians who have a particular fondness for being on our knees in front of our handsome, strappin' butches (or femmes, if ya can work it like that). Felice came through for me. Here's an excerpt from her column:

What’s a lesbian blowjob? You strap on your favorite dildo. Your partner takes it in her mouth, sucking, licking, deep-throating, usually while holding onto the shaft of the dildo so that she can rub the base into your mons and clitoris. You can also thrust into her mouth. Her hand on your shaft will help control the depth of your thrusts.

Why would anyone want to suck a hunk of silicone? The allure of this practice is part fantasy and part sensation. Most women who enjoy fellatio with a strap-on get off on the gender twist. Many of those who “pack” - tucking a strap-on dildo into Levi’s 501s - enjoy the ritual of a woman unbuttoning their jeans to reveal their package. Others get off on the feeling of power they experience when watching their partner on her knees, servicing them. And if you’re into butch-on-butch gay boy fantasies, well, reserve your glory hole and send out the invitations.

All I can say is, "God Bless America -- and all the good lesbians like Felice."

Sorry everyone, I can't copy and paste Felice's entire article anymore. Something about copyright issues. Ha! If you want to keep up with her (ya know you do), visit Whole Lesbian Sex 0n Q Syndicate.
